My Moovers : Moving House Checklist By The Professional Team
There is a lot to organize when moving house before moving day, so the My Moovers Team is here to make it easy for you. It’s not as simple as hiring movers and packing up your stuff. Many other things need to be managed to ensure you have a stress-free move. The team at My Moovers QLD has put together a checklist to get you started.
Approximately eight weeks before moving day is when My Moovers recommends you need to start. If you stay on track, you will be organized and well prepared for moving day.
My Moovers recommends: 8-7 weeks prior
- The first step is to find a removalist. Ask friends and family if they have any recommendations or contact My Moovers online moving platform for a quick quote by a trusted removalist in your area.
- Once you have your movers booked, make sure you book time off work; ideally one to two days before and the same after the move. The time before and after will allow you to finish up last-minute tasks and have extra time to unpack.
- The third step, My Moovers QLD suggests, is to create a moving folder. This folder should have all the essential paperwork related to your move.
- Now is the time to start a moving budget. These costs include the cost of the movers and any additional charges that may arise with them. With years of removal experience, My Moovers suggests you read your contract thoroughly to ensure you understand any additional costs that might come up.
Items that you can also add to your moving budget are transferring utilities, cleaning, packing supplies, early termination fees of memberships etc. My Moovers QLD can not only find you the best mover but also make your move even easier by organizing cleaning, transferring utilities and moving supplies.
6 weeks prior:
- Order your boxes and packing supplies. My Moovers sell moving supplies and can advise how many and what supplies you will require. The supplies may take a few days to arrive so order at the beginning of week 6.
- Next is to declutter. It is much easier to start packing if you declutter before you start packing. You can either donate or sell these items.
5 weeks prior:
- Now that your My Moovers moving supplies have arrived you can start packing the items you will not need over the next five weeks. Things like artwork, seasonal clothing/shoes, fine china etc. Make sure as you are packing these items you label your boxes.
At My Moovers QLD, we find it easy to label each box 1,2,3 and have a notebook marked with all the things in each box. This method will allow you to quickly lookup what is in each box and find it. If there are fragile items in the box, make sure you mark fragile on the box. Another great labelling method the My Moovers team suggests is to colour code the boxes to what room it belongs. - Once you have removed all the artwork off the walls, now is time to do any minor repairs to the walls and other areas.
- Before four weeks, you want to notify the utility companies of your move. If you are ending any memberships such as gyms and clubs, you want to make sure you do this now. If you want to take this stress off your hands, let the My Moovers QLD team do all the work with transferring your utilities.
3-4 weeks prior My Moovers recommends:
- Start sending out change of address notifications for magazine subscriptions, banks, insurance etc. My Moovers also suggests doing a mail redirect in case you forgot to make any changes.
- Next for packing are items such as paperwork/tax returns, decorative items, clothing, items in the garage and storage areas.
1-2 weeks prior:
- During this time you want to try using up items in your fridge/freezer. The less of these items you need to move the better. More often then not, My Moovers QLD team has seen food spoil in the summer and having to throw these items out.
- Start organizing a moving day suitcase/bag. You want to have all the essentials, including a change of clothes, pyjamas, toiletries, phone charger etc. My Moovers knows that moving day is tiring and you don’t want to be searching for these items the first day.
- It’s also a great idea to have pillows and bedding set aside so you can easily access them when you arrive and start making the beds. My Moovers QLD also recommends you mark the box so you can easily find them.
- Do a trash run. The less junk you have laying around, the easier it will be to finish up the last of the packing and organizing. My Moovers can’t stress enough to ensure all junk has been removed before the movers arrive. The movers will think it needs to be loaded onto the truck or not see items that require to be loaded.
- My Moovers QLD recommends if you have small kids or pets, ask a friend or relative if they can look after them during the move. The front doors will be open, and the movers will be going in and out. Having small children and pets running around is not going to be safe.
Only one week to go recommendations by My Moovers QLD:
- Drain water hoses to your ice maker and washing machine. When the My Moovers QLD team of recommended movers arrive, they shouldn’t have to worry about water dripping and draining hoses.
- Drain any petrol and oil from items such as lawnmower and lawn equipment. Under the moving guidelines, movers can not transport items such as petrol and oil. For a full list of prohibited items, contact My Moovers QLD team.
- Start packing up any electronics, tv etc. Make sure you also take a picture of the wires so you can quickly hook them back up. If you don’t have the original boxes, My Moovers can also supply special packing items for large electronics.
- Pack a food/supply essentials box for everything you will need for the first 24 hours. Items such as coffee, tea, sugar, kettle, plates, utensils, snacks, breakfast food etc.
- Start dismantling furniture and beds. Keep a well-labelled box/bag with all screws and small bits. My Moovers QLD also urges you to pack the necessary tools needed to assemble these items, so you are not looking through boxes to find your tools.
1 day before moving day:
- Call and confirm with the movers the arrival time. Or if you have booked through the My Moovers online platform, give My Moovers a call, and they will make sure it’s all arranged and confirmed for you.
- Do a walk through the house and make sure everything has been packed and ready for the movers.
Finally, it’s moving day! Once the movers arrive, show them around and let them get to work. If you have followed this My Moovers handy checklist, you should now be able just to sit back and relax till the unpacking starts.
